Other Interesting Visitor Questions (Updated Jumaadaa Al-Aakhirah 1422)

  1. If Islam is so positive towards science, how come more or less all major scientific breakthroughs are made by non-Muslims? How come people in the Western world (and some Eastern Asian countries) have invented just about anything you can think of which has been invented in the last centuries?

Personally I believe that facts prove more than theories, and there's a big difference between what the Bible and the Qur'aan say, and what is the reality of the world today. And one more little thing; I'm not a scientist, but it seems to me that the Qur'aan's description of the development of the fetus could be discovered by simply opening a pregnant woman's belly. I have also read "scientific proof" supporting the belief that extraterrestrials visit earth regularly, but that doesn't mean everyone will immediately believe it, does it?

  2. In the embryology section of your site you have mentioned this hadeeth: "When forty-two nights have passed over the drop (nutfah), Allah sends an angel to it, who shapes it and makes its ears, eyes, skin, flesh and bones. Then he says, O Lord, is it male or female? and your Lord decides what he wishes. (Muslim)."

Non-Muslims argue that the sex of a fetus is determined by the male sperm cell and right after conception. While this hadeeth says that Allah decides whether it is male or female after 42 days. Please provide an appropriate reply. Or if you find that this hadeeth is not authentic then please remove this from your site. The Non-Muslims have absolutely no other objection about your site and it is a beautiful site. But because of this hadeeth we can t introduce non-Muslims to your site.

  3. You have an inconsistency in the argument you are trying to make. In your effort to show that science proves, or is in excellent agreement with Islamic revelations, you have made an error. In the section "Islam and science," you published the following paragraph: In another Hadeeth, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When forty-two nights have passed over the drop (nutfah), Allah sends an angel to it, who shapes it and makes its ears, eyes, skin, flesh and bones. Then he says, "O Lord, is it male or female?" and your Lord decides what he wishes. (Muslim). This contradicts scientific knowledge. The gender of a new human (and all mammals for that matter) is determined at the moment of conception, when sperm and ovum come together. It is the sperm's contribution of an X or Y chromosome that decides the gender at time = 0, not at time = 42 days. Now, there are genetic diseases which lead to gender identity ambiguity, but for normal (more than 99%) cases, the gender is determined immediately. Correcting your inconsistency may improve the power of your argument...

  4. Does the Qur'aan or Prophet Mohamed Sal-lal-lahu-alaihi-wassalam (peace be upon him) speak about genetic mutation? If so, where?

  5. What does Islam say about Darwin's theory of evolution?

  6. Are you kidding me about iron being an extraterrestrial element? That is a bunch of nonsense!!

  7. I've a question about the Quran. Allah says: ''yakhruju min baini sulbi wa taraaib'' What do you say about this?

  8. Is the doctors knowledge of the fetus in the uterus complete?

  3. May anyone translate this site into other languages or use the information in it?
The site is for the public and you may use the information therein freely. We of course would appreciate if you cite the source on the condition that you do not alter the text. As far as translation, we cannot endorse any translation as official unless we review it and unfortunately we cannot do so at this time.

  4. Are the people who made the site www.ThisIsTruth.org Sunni Muslims and has all of the information given been proven?
We indeed follow the path of Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah and we pray that we indeed deserve to be considered as such in the sight of Allah. As far as the information contained in the site, the compiler has attempted to verify what is within. Sh. Abdul-Majeed Az-ZIndani is actually the principle individual responsible for putting together the information. Abdullah Al-Rehaili put it in book form. We edited it, re-designed it for the web and have recently finished an updated and revised print version. We pray that any errors in the facts or the texts is minimal and it should be realized that some opinions or perspectives may be subject to interpretation but indeed most of what was compiled is accurate and undisputed, and may Allah reward them for their efforts, Ameen.

  5. Why are some of the full names of professors in the book not given? Are they real?
The professors are indeed real and known. The reason some last names may be missing is because the compiler basically transcribed from the original video which had some flaws in translation. The actual person appeared on camera and therefore the impact of his statement was sufficient whereas in print form it may need additional information. We have tried to give as full references as we were able and we hope to very soon have an updated version of this website with video clips included, inshaa allah

  7. If Islam is so positive towards science, how come more or less all major scientific breakthroughs are made by non-Muslims? How come people in the Western world (and some Eastern Asian countries) have invented just about anything you can think of which has been invented in the last centuries?

Personally I believe that facts prove more than theories, and there's a big difference between what the Bible and the Quran say, and what is the reality of the world today. And one more little thing; I'm not a scientist, but it seems to me that the Quran's description of the development of the fetus could be discovered by simply opening a pregnant woman's belly. I have also read "scientific proof" supporting the belief that extraterrestrials visit earth regularly, but that doesn't mean everyone will immediately believe it, does it?

Your question and commentary are perhaps understandable, but not completely accurate. It is indeed true that many major breakthroughs in modern science have been made by non-Muslims and there are several reasons for this, some of which we will list but by no means comprehensively because indeed it is a study requiring volumes to clarify thoroughly.

The main point you should realize is that the site is not made to point to the number of accomplishments or lack thereof among Muslims or others but merely to show that the type of knowledge that is either explicitly stated or pointed to in the two source texts of Islam amount to nothing less than a miraculous occurrence and can by no means be boiled down to coincidence.

Secondly it is to show that there is not necessarily a conflict between scientific method or any blockade to scientific investigation based upon the Qur'aan or the sunnah even though as Muslims and believers we do not base our faith upon scientific discovery. You may not be aware that because of the attitude and understanding of the Muslims many centuries ago toward the Qur'aan and the hadeeth, the earliest and most significant scientific discoveries upon which much of western scientific theory and method are based, stemmed from Muslim scientific efforts prior to the Renaissance.

Indeed, western scholars directly attribute the rise of scientific thought and the advent of the period of Enlightenment to the efforts of Muslim scholars who had advanced far beyond Europeans or other eastern cultures in the fields of alchemy, chemistry, botany, agriculture, mathematics, astronomy and medicine. Indeed the knowledge and research of Muslim scholars and their translation and preservation of even pre-Islamic texts from the Classical Era and their correction and expansion of them was instrumental in the revival and resurrection of scientific investigation in the western world.

This leads to the next point of the discovery and contact made by Westerners with the Muslim East who were amazed at the vast wealth, infrastructure and sophistication of their civilization at a time when most of Europe was wallowing in backwardness and religious oppression. Many of the educational centers such as those in Cordoba Spain were a direct consequence of Muslim influence and even the robes worn by graduates and judges to this day stem from that long history and tradition of learning and scholarship. Much of these historically proven and factual circumstances led to trade as well as incursions into Muslim lands for the purposes of conquest.

You are surely aware of the Crusades which although deriving their fuel from religious fervour among the masses were in actuality largely motivated by economic considerations. Unlike the West, where the Church was seen as the main oppressive force against scientific thought because it looked upon science as blasphemous, quite the contrary was found in the Islamic world. Having said all that, there are many other circumstances that led to material or scientific decline or stagnation in the Muslim world and its ultimate lagging behind the West in many matters scientific or material in particular since the advent of the Industrial Revolution. This requires a long and detailed discussion for which this is not the place and we simply refer you to objective and thorough historical analysis which requires research on your part. There are Islamic web sites that may deal with the subject to some degree.

Muslims have also "lagged behind" if you will, because of an identity crisis, "brain-drain" and lack of confidence stemming from weak Islamic education, mis-education and re-education by colonial and other influences foreign to the Islamic world. Also you are not at all correct in your assumption that the matters referred to in the hadeeth or the Qur'aan could have been ascertained through the opening of the womb of a woman.

Firstly, there are no known such scientific investigations reported or known from that time, and this was dealt with by Dr. Keith Moore in his detailed analysis and research.

Secondly most of the details about the periods of development in the uterus and so forth occur at a microscopic level that was not possible to see and certainly no one had the ability to categorize the stages of development at the time unless another miracle occurred!

One chief point we must make to you however is that regardless of the outward circumstances that led to or contributed to the lagging behind of Muslim societies, Muslim and non-Muslim alike must realize that ultimately it was lack of adherence to Islamic teachings that led to that decline along with lack of dependence upon the principles and teachings of Islam and their improper application among Muslims on a personal and a societal level. Corruption, greed, over-indulgence, laziness, intimidation are all reasons which helped to undermine and weaken the Islamic polity as well as retard scientific progress and most of these things are "internal" matters that may have external causes. Matters of the heart such as weakness of faith as well as a lack of proper understanding and implementation of true religion and deviation from its clear path may be the greater causes of any so-called "backwardness" or stagnation than anything that comes from "outside" forces, and from this we ask Allah's forgiveness, guidance, and protection, ameen.

It should be also pointed out that it is not as though there are no Muslim pioneers or advanced innovative scientists or thinkers present to this day, but this is not our main focus. We urge everyone, whether Muslims or non-Muslims, who are beguiled and deceived that material wealth and scientific progress are necessary signposts of correctness and success, to look to the principles and practices of Islam in their true light from pure sources and we pray they would discover clearly the wealth, fullness and viability of Islam for today and tomorrow that in no way impedes the progress of man. Indeed along with the scientific advances that have occurred, environmental and fundamental human problems still persist and remain unsolved by science and have indeed been sometimes created and exacerbated by it!

If our focus is upon material gain and advancement as is much of the secularism and those who admire it, then we may be granted that if we educate ourselves and work hard enough for it. But if we forget that it is Allah Almighty, the Creator and Provider of all things who enabled any of us at all to attain any achievements and heights in this life, no amount of worldly accomplishment will compensate for our spiritual loss and its consequences in the Hereafter.

We hope you continue your quest and there is no sin in inquisitiveness...but there is in Inquisition. and other Islamic sites to further your knowledge and awareness of Islam and the view of the Muslims and sincere practitioners of Islam.

  1. In the embryology section of your site you have mentioned this hadith: "When forty-two nights have passed over the drop (nutfah), Allah sends an angel to it, who shapes it and makes its ears, eyes, skin, flesh and bones.

The hadeeth is indeed authentic. The meaning of the hadeeth has been explained by the non-Muslim expert in embryology Dr. Joe Leigh Simpson in the same book in the chapter Islam and Science. If scientists have proven or argue that the sex of the foetus is determined at the moment of conception by the male sperm it does not nullify the validity of the hadeeth but it could mean that what is referred to therein is how the child may live or be raised or even that it will actually develop full term into a male or female for indeed much can occur between the period of conception to the time of birth that could alter that process and Allah knows best.

Finally we should add that the statement "And your Lord decides what He wishes" does not mean that He did not know the sex of the foetus even before it was conceived. It is the angel that asked the question of the One Who had already determined the sex of the child.

Never forget, our deen is not dependent on or determined by science.

  2. You have an inconsistency in the argument you are trying to make. In your effort to show that science proves, or is in excellent agreement with Islamic revelations, you have made an error. In the section "Islam and science," you published the following paragraph: In another Hadeeth, Prophet Muhammad Sal-lal-lahu-alaihi-wassalam (peace be upon him) said: When forty-two nights have passed over the drop (nutfah), Allah sends an angel to it, who shapes it and makes its ears, eyes, skin, flesh and bones. Correcting your inconsistency may improve the power of your arguement...

We are not the authors of This Is The Truth however we will forward your question to those with knowledge of the subject who will in shaa Allah reply to you. One matter we must point out is that although you mention that scientists believe the sex of a mammal is determined at the moment of conception, there is however no scientific means to determine whether a person will truly develop into or live as a healthy male or female nor does that contradict the fact that Allah knew what the sex of the person would be not just before the 42 days when the angels ask the question, but prior to the person being conceived all together. Thus it is Allah who determines the sex of any individual even before conception and not the chromosomes of the mother and father for He is the Creator of the chromosomes and the entire process of reproduction, and Allah knows best.

  3. Does the Qur'aan or Prophet Mohamed Sal-lal-lahu-alaihi-wassalam (peace be upon him) speak about genetic mutation? If so, where?

Unless of course one was to interpret the miraculous transformation of certain people such as the punishment of the breakers of the Sabbath whom Allah transformed into apes and swine [Al-Qur'aan 5:60] as a possible example or the Ya'jooj wa Ma'jooj (Gog and Magog) who are locked and sealed within the earth [Al-Qur'aan 18:94 - 99, Al-Bukhari (English), Vol. 9 Hadeeth 249) and Allah knows best.

The Islamic position regarding such matters would however be derived upon principles found in the Qur'aan and the authentic hadeeth and any possible analogous situations, the same as any other newly occurring matter of interpretation or fiqh. If you are referring to "cloning" then there have been some opinions brought out by Islamic scholars based on the known information that may be found through the Contemporary Jurisprudence Research Journal that may be obtained from P.O. Box 1918, Riyadh 11441, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or perhaps a Muslim University like the Journal of Science and Technology, King Abdul-'Aziz City For Science and Technology, P.O. Box 6086, Riyadh 11442, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or other resources that we do not have at this time.

  4. What does Islam say about Darwin's theory of evolution?

Before discussing any scientific theory from a Muslim perspective, a basic axiom of the Muslim attitude toward knowledge should be understood. The same God Who created the physical universe also revealed scripture as a guidance for human beings.

Although the main purpose of revelation is not to describe the physical universe, it uses such descriptions to develop arguments about the existence and attributes of God and life after death. Since God is the Creator of the physical universe and the source of revelation, there should be no contradiction between the two. If there appears to be, then we are either misinterpreting physical reality or misinterpreting revelation.

The Theory of Evolution, as proposed by Darwin and refined with insights derived from genetics, is objectionable from a Muslim point of view because it elevates chance to the level of a deity. An example of this point of view is summed up in the title of Richard Dawsons book, The Blind Watchmaker. In The Meaning of Evolution, George Gaylord Simpson repeats the official dogma of the contemporary scientific guild: Man is the result of a purposeless and natural process that did not have him in mind. The evolutionary process is, according to them, controlled by two basic principles. The creative process is a matter of chance. Genes are randomly distributed when chromosomes unzip to form reproductive cells. A new combination is created in the union of sperm and egg. Occasional copying errors and mutations introduce new information. Nature then edits the creative process by causing weaker members of a species to die before reproducing, a process known as natural selection. According to Darwin, gradual changes accumulate by this process until the descendants of the original organism become so different from their ancestor that they constitute a different species.

     A. D. Eddington, a proponent of evolution from the early twentieth century, appealed to the creative power of chance by stating that if you chained a bunch of monkeys to typewriters and gave them enough time, they would eventually type out the collected works of Shakespeare. But if one gives this thought problem more than the most cursory thought, the absurdity of his proposition is glaringly clear. Lets say you check in on the monkeys after an hour. You see something like this:

Qqqqe jjjlllll ljcvcvdf dfidof jffjf fjdmvivoirr

j4 rofjvc v if [ vvskjgfqpjp apsif askfdf ldkffa

    q3409344lmvmvlsdjgfu3pqfklamdscpaiefp

    0t pejlmdvliajrgpqcm,c,m

Occasionally you will find a word embedded in a string of characters. More occasionally you will find a word standing alone. Very rarely you might find a pair of words. To find a sentence would be astonishing. To find a sentence free of spelling and grammatical errors would be more improbable. After years of gibberish, one day you find the following:

Egeon Proceed, Solinus, to procure my fall, And by the doom of death end woes and all. Duke Merchant of Syracusa, plead no more. I am not partial to infringe our laws

And for page after page you find the entire Comedy of Errors, followed by several hundred pages of Shakespeares other plays. If you determined that the monkeys really did type it without visible outside help, would it not be logical to conclude that some unseen intelligence was guiding the monkeys hands?

Consider the amount of genetic information in the body of one human being. At the moment of conception, a fertilized human egg is about the size of a pinhead. Yet, it contains information equivalent to about six billion chemical letters. This is enough information to fill 1000 books, each 500 pages thick. A computer operating system would represent only a fraction of that amount of information. Consider the impact of random change on the operating system of your computer. How likely would it be to cause an improvement in the system?

At a conference of evolutionary biologists and mathematicians, the mathematicians infuriated the biologists by pointing out that there simply would not be enough time in the universe for life to evolve by chance. The analogy given by one scientist critical of the theory is that of a tornado passing through a junkyard and leaving a jet fighter assembled in its wake. Proponents of blind chance as a creative force also have a major difficulty dealing with a chicken and egg problem associated with the parallel development of DNA and the mechanisms for translating this information into actual proteins.

Consider a compact disk digitally encoded with a song. For you to convert that information to music you would need some sophisticated electronic equipment. If you dont have it, the CD is not good for much more than an ornament dangling from your rearview mirror. Likewise, the information encoded in DNA is useless without the sophisticated cellular machinery that reads it and converts it into the proteins necessary for the bodys functioning. How did the information system and the decoding machinery both evolve independently by chance? Darwin mentioned two major tests for the feasibility of his theory. The first was the fossil record. He stated that because only a handful of fossils had been discovered at the time that he proposed his theory, the intermediate forms that would indicate gradual evolution remained to be found. By the 1970s Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Etheridge, two Young Turks in the biological science establishment, admitted that the fossil record was characterized by the sudden appearance of species and their continuation unchanged for eons, followed by their abrupt disappearance. Intermediate forms were far too scarce in the fossil record to validate Darwins theory as originally proposed.

To answer the objections raised by this fact they proposed the Theory of Punctuated Equilibrium. According to them, evolutionary change occurs when a small population of a species becomes isolated from the main branch. Cataclysmic environmental stress then radically selects for new traits in the isolated gene pool, driving change in a virtual blink of the eye in geological time. According to them, the fossils that would record such change will not be found because of the nature of the process. The time is too short and the number of individuals involved is too small. This ingenious solution moves the Theory of Evolution out of the realm of science, which declares that a theory must be falsifiable in order to be subject to objective verification. Falsifiability means that one must be able to propose certain detectable facts, which, if they are found, would cause one to conclude that the theory one has proposed is false. If one proposes that the process took place in a way that would leave no traces, then the theory is not falsifiable. If it is not falsifiable, then it is also not scientifically verifiable. Those who believe in it do so by taking a leap of faith.

A second test of falsifiability that Darwin proposed was related to the gradual evolution of organs. In The Origin of Species, p.154, Darwin stated: If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.

The problem with Darwins theory is that every slight modification of an organism has to give that organism a selective advantage over creatures that dont have the modification. Organs are like machines that carry out specific functions an organism needs to stay alive. Consider a mousetrap, a rather simple machine. To work, it needs a base, a spring, a means of attaching the spring to the base, a trigger mechanism and other parts. Unless all the parts are present the mousetrap will not catch mice.

Michael Behe [Reference] has demonstrated that on the molecular level, even the simplest organs, such as the flagellum, the whip like tail that allows certain single-celled organisms to move through water, are more complex than a mousetrap. How could such mechanisms develop gradually when all the parts must be present for the organ to fulfill its function?

Although Muslims reject Darwinian evolution, it is worth noting that we also differ from Christian proponents of Creationism on a number of points. Creationists uphold a literal interpretation of Biblical accounts of early events in the history of the earth. Therefore, they propose that the earth is roughly six thousand years old. The texts of the Quran and the Sunnah do not mention or imply any figures for the age of the earth. Creationists also believe that every animal alive today is descended from animals aboard Noahs ark.

Although Muslims believe that Noah existed and that he carried animals aboard his ship to escape a flood, there is no evidence I am aware of in the authentic Islamic texts that would make us conclude that the flood covered the entire earth. [this is a debatable point in tafseer -Ed] A major conflict between Islamic texts and Darwinian orthodoxy is over the evolution of human beings. The Quran tells the story of Adam and Eve and their fall from Paradise in a number of passages. It states: O Children of Adam, do not let Satan seduce you as he caused your two parents to go forth from the Garden1

The Quran also refers repeatedly to the fact that humanity was created from a single soul and that Allah then created its mate from that soul: O mankind, be careful of your duty to your Lord, Who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the two of them has spread forth a multitude of men and women.2

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also stated, All of you are Children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust.3

Although these statements could possibly be construed to carry metaphorical meanings, the basic rule for interpreting speech is that it should be understood according to the obvious meaning unless evidence arises to indicate that the obvious meaning was not intended. In discussing the physical evidence upon which the theories of anthropology rest, it is important to distinguish between the physical facts and the explanations people devised for those facts. No one denies the existence of primate fossils such as the finds of the Leakeys in Olduvai Gorge, etc. The question is: what do we make of these remains? Do they represent transitional forms between a common ancestor of apes and human beings, or are they extinct ape species or, in some cases, extinct races of human beings? Proving that these specimens eventually developed into human beings will be very difficult except for those who are already convinced. As one man said, I wouldnt have seen it if I didnt believe it.

  5. Are you kidding me about iron being an extraterrestrial element? That is a bunch of nonsense!!

    Iron In the Quraan

In Soorah Al-Hadeed the 57th chapter of the Quraan in Ayaat 25 Allah states:

Wa anzalnaal hadeed, feehi basun shadeed, wa manaafiu linaas (I have revealed (sent down) iron which has great force in it and benefit for humans)

The term anzalnaa has been interpreted as "revealed" from the early generation of interpreters because it indeed has the meaning of "to reveal". Yet, even when Allah uses the term anzalnaa, for example in Wa anzalnaa ilaykal Quraan lidh dhikr (We have revealed to you the Quraan for remembrance) in reference to the Prophet Muhammad about the Quraan being revealed to him, it did actually involve coming down since it was sent down from the Lawhil-Mahfoudh, to Baitul-Izzah in the first heaven, and from there the angel Jibreel brought verses down according to the command of Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) so there was a process of coming down.

Now modern science, in looking at the issue of iron in the world, came to the conclusion that the origin of iron was from the core of the earth because the core of the earth is approximately 35% iron and then nickel. This is the molten core of the earth and as you go farther away from the core you get less and less iron until you get some 5.6% iron near the crust of the earth. Still it is amongst the highest elements in the crust percentage- wise, but it still appears to come from the inside outward. So where does the idea of the coming down of iron fit in? Again, the conclusion was it was revealed. That is, knowledge of its use was revealed to human beings. Allah gave them the capacity to understand and to utilize iron. This was the explanation given.

The Sun's temperature is 27,000,000 Fahrenheit (i.e. 15,000,000 Celsius) at the center.
The Sun's temperature is 27,000,000 Fahrenheit (i.e. 15,000,000 Celsius) at the center.

However, more modern research came to the conclusion that in fact iron couldnt have begun in the core of the earth! It couldnt have begun there! Why? Because the sun of our solar system, which is the hottest location in the solar system, in its own core only reaches - according to their calculation - approximately 15,000,000 degrees Celsius. Of course this is quite hot, however it is not hot enough to produce iron! The most common element in the universe is hydrogen, which is the first element in the periodic table, while helium is number two and everything else is a combination containing some fusion of the atoms of hydrogen and helium to produce other elements. Iron is way down the line. It is number 56 and as such, the heat which is necessary had to be in the billions of degrees! They estimate someplace it had to be around 5 billion degrees to produce iron. So our sun could not produce iron. So then where did the iron come from? This was the question puzzling researchers.

Surface of the Sun In the late eighties, studying stars, they came to realize of course that there were huge stars much greater than the Sun our star which did in fact in their degeneration, their evolution or development, generate the kind of heat that could produce iron when they went nova or super-nova. They exploded and iron shot out into the universe in the form of meteorites etc. Most of the meteorites which hit the Earth are made mostly of iron. So in looking back, scientists in the late eighties began to re-examine their view of the development of the Earth and they came to the conclusion that in fact what happened was the Earth - which was a produce of the evolution of the Sun - was like a ball of ash and that the meteorites hit the surface of the Earth and in hitting the surface it increased the heat of the Earth because with the impact there was energy released. So meteor showers hitting the Earth increased the heat enough to melt that iron, not produce iron, but to melt that iron and it would then sink through the surface towards the center of the Earth and became concentrated in the core of the earth and thats how they explain it now.

You can find this in Stephen Hawkings book called A Brief History of Time a best-seller from one of the biggest atheists out there and another book called The First Three Minutes by Steven Weinberg. Both of them present the exact same picture of how iron came to the core of the Earth. So from that, we see iron actually coming down to the Earth as Allah described it.

Additionally, iron is the most stable element. The bonds which hold its atomic structure together are the strongest bonds of all of the other elements so it does have that basun shadeed. And of course its benefit is that it being most of the Earths core it produced the basis of the gravitational pull of the Earth which holds the atmosphere and the biosphere around the Earth. Without that iron core to produce the gravitational field, we would not have any atmosphere on the Earth and no life would survive on the Earth! Critical! Furthermore, when you go into human beings there is hemoglobin, and when you go into plants chlorophyll. These are the essential elements that transform energy from material sources, from the Sun etc. to chemical energy in our bodies which allow the cells to grow. In everything, both human beings and plants, iron is essential for their development and this was described in the Quraan some 1400 years ago.

These are among the signs, for those who would reflect, that there is in fact a God.

  6. I've a question about the Quran. Allah says: ''yakhruju min baini sulbi wa taraaib'' What do you say about this?

We reaffirm that Islam is not dependent nor based upon scientific discovery and the site merely tries to point out that which coincides with scientific discovery or alludes to it. Dr. Az-Zindaani and others bring forth not the basic commentary or explanation of the texts but rather possible or probable interpretations based on what is known from a scientific view and he clearly shows that it is impossible that certain statements could be coincidental or even made at all without a certain degree of scientific knowledge unavailable at the time of Muhammad . Indeed some of the perspective held by Dr. Az-Zindaani or any Muslim possessing sound belief (i.e. belief based upon Islamic pillars of belief) will approach and view matters in a light that the non-believer or the one who does not have an Islamic base will not.

Certainly a secular humanist who seeks to divorce religious thought from other aspects of life- if not all - or to dismiss it as being irrelevant or not conducive to progressive thought and scientific pursuit, or who believes that they can attain guidance or pure morality based upon their rational intellect alone will have great difficulty with much of what is written in Islamic literature in general. Indeed, one may take issue with the conclusions of the book but you should also be aware of the depth of the Arabic language and its nuances which seems to be a point somewhat lost on certain critics who always depend upon translations in languages like English or any others which are themselves interpretations.

For example, the entire objection and translation of the verses 'min bainasulbi wat taraa'ib" Sura- (86:6-7) as "He is created from a drop emitted - proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs" or as in the Quranic translation by Maulana Fazlur Rahman Munshi, the Ayaat (86:6-7) were translated as: "semen is produced from the back of a man and from the breasts (mammary glands) of an woman." is a perfect example of where the critic is obviously limited in his understanding of Arabic language and even the rules of Qur'aanic textual interpretation and is thus totally dependent on translations and his own rationale or understanding or that of a translator who as well is limited.

It is agreed that these verses if translated and taken literally clearly contradict what is now known and proven to be the origin of semen or sperm or the female side of it. However the use of metaphor is very common in the Arabic language and when faced with what is a clear contradiction to established fact, Islamic scholars stand upon a basic rule that "The Qur'aan or the authentic hadeeth cannot contradict what is known to be an absolute fact" therefore if such texts are found, the scholar is forced to re-examine the interpretation of the texts.

It is very possible that the scientific level of knowledge and understanding of the people in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as well as those before him and long after forced them to interpret this text from a 'scientific' point of view erroneously (i.e. "semen is produced from the back of a man and from the breasts (mammary glands) of an woman." see Ibn Katheer and other classical commentaries) but the fundamental understanding of the verse that sulb refers to the male and taraaib to the female in no way contradicts any scientific fact.

Dr. Maurice Bucaille mentions in his famous work "The Bible, the Qur'an and Science" (p. 208) about these verses: "The sexual area of the man is indicated in the text of the Qur'aan by the word "sulb" (singular). the sexual areas of the woman are designated in the Qur'aan by the word "taraa'ib" (plural).

This is the translation which appears to be the most satisfactory. It is different from the one that is often given by English and French translators, i.e. "(Man) has been created by a liquid poured forth which issues from between the vertebral column and the bones of the breast." this would seem more to be an interpretation than a translation. It is hardly comprehensible.

The behavior of a man in his intimate relationships with his wife is stated implicitly."

    Allah says in Surah At-Tariq:

"(5) LET MAN, then, observe out of what he has been created: (6) he has been created out of a seminal fluid (7) issuing from between the back bone ( spinal column) and ribs ( chest bone) *

*yakhruju min baini sulbi wa taraaib'' Sulb means back bone which in medical terminology is called vertebral column or spinal column and taraib is a plural world meaning ribs which are in 12 pairs guarding the chest.#

     EXPLANATION:

The seminal fluid (semen) is produced in a pair of testis (the male reproductive organ} situated in scrotum (coverings round the testis). Of course in an adult person the testis are not situated in between the back bone and chest bone but these have an embryological relation (developmental)
to a site which is situated "in between the back bone and ribs": According to the research done in the field of Embryology (science of human development) the pair of testis which produce seminal fluid, start developing at lumber region, during intrauterine life i.e. the time when the child is in the womb of mother. This area is exactly in-between the backbone and the ribs. Latter on as child develops the testis descends down and before the time the child is born, the testis has descended to scrotum (coverings around the testis). But their control i.e. the nerve supply remains at the same lumber region through out the life of the person. Further to say whenever there is any injury inflicted to that region, the sexual act is lost. Secondly the nourishment for the testis i.e. the blood supply also come from the same lumber region through out the life of a person, that to if hampered at any time results into loss of the function of the testis. Meaning there by although the testis descend down but their control and nourishment remain at a site which is "in-between the back bone and ribs.

  7. Is the doctors knowledge of the fetus in the uterus complete?

     Praise be to Allaah.

Imaam Abu Abdullaah Muhammad ibn Ismaaeel al-Bukhaari reported, in  al-Jaami al-Saheeh, which is the soundest book after the Quraan: "Ibraaheem ibn al-Mundhir told me that Man told us that Maalik told me, from Abdullaah ibn Deenaar from Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allaah (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be  upon Him) said:

The keys of the Unknown are five, which no-one knows except Allaah:

    no-one knows what will happen tomorrow except Allaah;
    no-one knows what is in the wombs except Allaah;
    no-one knows when it will rain except Allaah;
no-one knows in which land he will die; and
no-one knows when the Hour will begin except Allaah."

(Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Kitaab Tafseer al-Quraan, hadeeth no. 4328).

He also reported it with the wording:

"The keys of the Unseen are five: Verily, Allah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He send down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily Allaah is All-Knower, All-Aware (of things) [Luqmaan 31:34]."
[Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Kitaab Tafseer al-Quraan, Baab (wa indahu mafaatih al-ghaybi laa yalamu illaa huwa), hadeeth no. 4261].

Allah is the only One Who has knowledge of the Unseen, as He says (Interpretation of the meaning):

"Say: None in the heavens and the earth knows the Unseen except  Allaah . "
    [al-Naml 27:65]

The Unseen referred to in this aayah is the same as that described in Soorat Luqmaan (see quote in preceding paragraph). There is no doubt whatsoever that this hadeeth is saheeh. What has confused the questioner is the fact that doctors are able to know the gender of the foetus via x-rays and ultrasound scans, but we should note that this knowledge is vague and incomplete. They may make mistakes, as has happened on numerous occasions. Moreover, they can only perform these scans etc. after a certain number of weeks of pregnancy have passed, and not before. Even if they know whether the foetus is male or female, they do not know whether it will be miscarried or carried to term, whether it will be born alive or dead. They do not know the precise length of time that it will stay in its mothers womb. They have nothing but conjecture and uncertainties. They do not know how long this person will live, how he will behave or what his provision will be, or whether he will be of the people of  Paradise or the people of Hell. Knowledge of what is in the wombs is not merely a matter of knowing whether the foetus is male or female; it is broader than that, and no-one can know it all except Allah, as He says (Interpretation of the meaning):

"Allaah knows what every female bears, and by how much the wombs fall short or exceed. Everything with Him is in (due) proportion." [al-Rad 13:8]

In his Tafseer of this aayah, Ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy on him, said:

"Allaah is telling us here of His complete knowledge: nothing is hidden from Him and He knows fully what the females of every species carry in their wombs. He says (Interpretation of the meaning): (He) knows that which is in the wombs, i.e., He knows whether it is male or female, good or bad, destined for Paradise or doomed to Hell, whether its life will be long or short. Similarly He says (Interpretation of the meaning): He knows you well when He created you from the earth, and when you were foetuses in your mothers wombs [al-Najm 53:32]

In the two Saheehs there is a report from Ibn Masood, who said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said:

"The way that each of you is created is that he is gathered in your mothers womb for forty days and then for a similar length of time as a blood-clot and then for a similar length of time as a lump of flesh. Then an angel is sent and he breathes the spirit into him and is charged with four commands: to write down his provision, his life-span, his actions, and whether he will be wretched or happy."

According to another hadeeth, the angel says:

OLord, male or female? Wretched or happy? How much provision? How long a life span? and he writes that."

     Al-Awfi said, from Ibn Abbaas:

"and by how much the wombs fall short" refers to miscarriage, and or exceed means how how far beyond the normal time the pregnancy will last before a child is born, because some women carry a child for ten months and some for nine months; the length of pregnancy varies from woman to woman. This is what is referred to here.

Al-Dahhaak said, from Ibn Abbaas, that this phrase referred to pregnancies longer or shorter than nine months." Every Muslim must believe in what the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) has told us, and not doubt a single word of it, because what the Prophet says is wahy (revelation) revealed to him by Allaah:

"By the star when it goes down, your companion (i.e., Muhammad) has neither gone astray nor has erred. Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration [wahy] that is inspired."
    [al-Najm 53:1-4]

Whoever doubts what the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said or doubts that it is wahy is a kaafir who has left Islam. The Muslim must believe that what the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said is absolutely true. This is shown in the hadeeth of Abdullaah ibn Amar, who said:

"I used to write down everything that I heard from the Messenger of Allaah (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him), because I wanted to memorize it. Quraysh told me not to do that and said: Are you writing everything down that you hear? The Messenger of Allaah is only a man who may speak when he is angry or happy. So I stopped writing things down, and I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allaah (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him). He pointed to his mouth and said: Write; by the One in Whose hand is my soul, nothing comes out of it (my mouth) but the truth."
(Reported by Abu Dawud, may Allaah have mercy on him, in al-Sunan, Kitaab al-Ilm, hadeeth no. 3161, see also Saheeh al-Jaami  , no. 1196).

We ask Allah to protect us from the whispers of Shaytaan and to give  us  strength of faith. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.
